The launch event of the latest anthology titled 'AFAJATO: Stories from Around the Volta Lake,' held on Thursday, 28th March 2024, at the B&PD Centre, African University College of Communications (AUCC) in Adabraka, Accra, by The Ama Atta Aidoo Centre For Creative Writing (AAACCW), was a celebration of Ghanaian literature and cultural heritage. The anthology, curated by Nana Sandy Achampong, director of the AAACCW, showcases the rich tapestry of narratives from the Volta region, featuring the works of 15 authors, predominantly beginners, who are now proudly part of the prestigious AAACCW.


During the launch, the Executive Director of the National Commission on Culture, Nana Otuo Owoahene Acheampong, emphasized the significance of regional anthologies in amplifying diverse voices and fostering community cohesion through storytelling. He commended the Afajato anthology for providing a platform for often marginalized voices, fostering a sense of belonging and cultural pride.

Among the authors present at the launch were Deborah Titus-Glover, Ellen Diamond, Ursula M. Abanga, Benjamin Cyril Arthur, Patience Millennium Hlorlewu, Kwesi Woode, and Kofi Dzogbewu, who were recognized for their contributions to the anthology. Notable attendees included the Queenmother of Adabraka Otuapai, Naa Korkor Aadzeioyi I; President of AUCC, Prof. Abeku Blankson; Registrar of AUCC, Miss Juliana Owusu-Ansah; Heads of Departments at AUCC; as well as students, staff, and supporters of Ghanaian literature.

The launch was gracefully overseen by Naa Kokor Aadzieoyi I, the Queen mother of Adabraka Otuapai, who highlighted the cultural importance of the anthology in preserving and sharing the vibrant heritage of the Volta region. She declared the Afajato book officially launched, emphasizing the importance of storytelling in understanding and embracing diverse communities.


Each author was honored with certificates recognizing their contributions, presented by Dr. Kemi WaleOlaitan, Acting Vice President of AUCC, along with specially designed tote bags containing copies of the anthology. Nana S. Achampong, Director of AAACCW, facilitated book sales, allowing attendees to support the center's initiatives and acquire copies of the anthology.


Ursula M. Abanga was particularly recognized and awarded for her involvement in the Afajato anthology, highlighting her talent and dedication to Ghanaian literature. In closing, Nana S. Achampong expressed gratitude to all attendees and praised the authors for their invaluable contributions to preserving Ghana's cultural heritage through storytelling.
